How to Pose for Prom: Behind the Scenes of Our Amazing Photoshoot!

Prom season is one of the most exciting times of the year for high school students. The dresses, the tuxes, the corsages, and of course, the photos! As a Louisville-based senior photographer, I know how important it is to feel confident in front of the camera—especially on such a special night. That’s why I decided to put together a fun and informative video series called "How to Pose for Prom."

This was one of the biggest collaborative projects I’ve ever organized, and I couldn’t have done it without the incredible group of high school students, moms, and vendors who contributed their time, talents, and resources. It was a massive effort, but WOW—it was also SO much fun! Let me take you behind the scenes and show you how it all came together.

The Planning: Assembling the Dream Team

Once I had the idea for the "How to Pose for Prom" series, I knew I needed an amazing group of students to bring it to life. I ran a model call and reached out to some moms I know with high school students. The response was overwhelming, and soon I had a fantastic group of four girls and four guys, ranging in age from 15 to 18, representing Atherton High School, Ballard High School, Eastern High School, Mercy Academy, and the Christian Educational Consortium (CEC).

What to Wear

Of course, a prom shoot isn’t complete without the perfect outfits! We partnered with XO by Sophia’s Bridal and Tux in St. Matthews, who graciously provided stunning formalwear for our models.

Our fitting session was held on Monday, February 12, and let me tell you - watching everyone try on different looks and seeing their faces light up was priceless. Many of them brought their moms along, making it a special moment for them, too! Since it was so close to Valentine's Day, I brought some heart-shaped glasses as a photo prop and gifted everyone a box of conversation hearts!

Next, I reached out to some of my favorite vendors, and I was beyond grateful for the support we received:

Florals: The talented Charissa of Charissa’s Floral Design created stunning bouquets and boutonnieres that completed each look beautifully.
Videography: Chelsea of CLW Productions joined us to capture all the magic on film (which I am still working through, but stay tuned!).
Venue: Mallorie and Kayla from The Venue & Co in Jeffersontown provided the perfect space for our photoshoot.

Going Steady - Prom Poses for Couples

The Photoshoot: A Day of Fun, Laughter & Picture-Perfect Moments

When the big day arrived, I could barely contain my excitement! The students looked absolutely incredible, and the energy in the room was electric. My goal was to create a video and photo guide that would help anyone—whether posing with a date, a best friend, or a whole group—feel confident and look their best in their prom pictures.

We covered a variety of poses, including:

✔ Classic Date Poses: How to stand naturally with a date and avoid stiff or awkward positioning.

✔ Fun Bestie Poses: Playful ways to showcase friendships and capture genuine laughs.

✔ Group Shots: How to create visually interesting compositions that don’t look forced.

✔ Solo Confidence: Posing tips for when you want to shine on your own!

Throughout the session, the students laughed, cheered each other on, and truly had a blast. It wasn’t just about the photos—it was about the experience. Seeing these young people gain confidence in front of the camera made all the hard work worth it!

The Final Product: Sharing the Magic

After the shoot, I got to work editing and selecting the best images to share with everyone involved. As with any collaborative styled shoot, I made sure that all participating vendors and models received access to the images to use as they wished. And, of course, I completed one final video, now uploaded to YouTube, so that anyone preparing for prom can learn these tips and feel their best—whether they hire me for their prom photos or not!

Because at the end of the day, everyone deserves to look and feel amazing on their special night.
